Eating More Plant Proteins Can Reduce The Risk Of Diabetes

Researchers have noted that many people eat too much meat and not enough vegetables and fruits. The National Institute of Health issued a guideline for physicians to recommend to their patients to eat plant-based proteins as an alternative to animal protein and as an effective way to reduce the risk for high cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, high BMI, cancer, and type 2 diabetes.

The Study On Type 2 Diabetes And Eating Plant Proteins

Latest studies reveal that consuming less animal meat, particularly processed meat and replacing it with nuts, whole grains, and other plant-based sources can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.  In fact, a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition noted that eating even a hundred grams of unprocessed meat every day can increase the likelihood of getting type 2 diabetes by as much as 19% while consumption of processed meats was linked to a 51% risk.

The long-term study involved 2,332 Finnish men between the age 42 and 60 years old. The respondents were examined according to their protein intake and their risk for type 2 diabetes. The study found out that replacing 15 of calories from animal protein with the same amount of plant protein can decrease the possibility of type 2 diabetes by as much as 18%.

 

The Shift From Animal To Plant-Based Proteins

New research concerning the harmful effects of red meat on health has pushed many consumers to eat healthily. In fact, the consumption of red meat in the United States fell by 33% since 1970 to about 101 lbs. per individual per year while the number of vegetarians has remained stable at 3%. Meanwhile, the number of vegetarian products has doubled over the past decade.

CytoSport Launches Evolve Brand to Compete in Plant-Based Protein

Dubbed as Evolve, this new CytoSport product is made from non-GMO, plant-based protein. Derived from peas, this new line of vegan protein products come in flavors like chocolate, toasted almonds, and vanilla. With this move, CytoSport is expecting to expand their customer reach to vegans and vegetarians, who naturally do not buy their products because they are dairy-based.

Greg Longstreet, the CEO, noted that the company needs to expand their market and they predict that plant-based proteins will dominate the market ten years from now. Although this is not the first time that the company has made innovations, launching Evolve is a very bold move by the corporation as it is well-known for making conventional protein shakes and powders. The move is beyond what the company is usually used to making.

Why Plant Proteins?

But why plant proteins? There is a premise that plant proteins are better sources of protein.  In fact, it is not only CytoSport that is now developing products using plant-based proteins. Even companies like Hormel, General Mills, Kellogg’s, and Tyson Foods have invested in plant-based proteins.

Aside from increasing revenue and improving their market reach, Evolve is also a way to introduce healthy drinks to women. The thing is that while the Muscle Milk brand is preferred mostly by men, Evolve was launched with female consumers in mind. It contains fewer calories than normal dairy-based protein shakes.

The Future for CytoSport

But while plant-based protein products are gaining traction in the market these days, CytoSport is facing a significant barrier as there are still many people who believe that consuming eggs and milk are the best sources of protein, instead of plants. Although this may be the case, the company is still banking on the belief that people will have a change of heart in the coming years. Aside from CytoSport, even Hormel is confident with this particular line of product. In fact, Hormel CEO Jim Snee noted that the company is projected to increase its sales by 2020.

Major meat producers in North America are now producing plant-based meats as consumers shift to protein alternatives. Tyson Foods followed the change by obtaining a 5% stake in plant-based protein food manufacturer, Beyond Meat. With this trend, other meat packers like Rügenwalder Mühle and Maple Leaf Foods are stepping up their production of plant-based meat made from soy, peas, and other crops.

Adam Grogan, senior vice president of marketing and innovation at Maple Leaf, noted that plant-based protein is very hot right now. In fact, the sales of alternative proteins jumped by 42% since 2010 which translated to $4 billion in sales this year. Moreover, there has been a decline in red meat consumption to 62.9 pounds per individual.

Reasons for The Meatless Shift

So, what is the reason behind the increasing trend of alternative plant-based proteins? Many diners have opted for plant-based proteins due to concerns about animal welfare as well as the environment. In fact, 38% of Americans are now eating at least one meatless meal weekly per the 2016 survey conducted by Innova Market Insights.

The plant-based lifestyle has been backed by famous celebrities and entrepreneurs. For instance, the California-based startup, Impossible Foods, was funded by Google Ventures and Bill Gates to create plant-based meats that have the same texture, flavor, and aroma of real meat.

The tremendous research that companies have been doing has led traditional meat packers to dedicate their research and development teams to develop competitive products for this growing market segment.

Necessity: The Mother of Invention

In Europe, there is a steep decline in meat consumption, particularly in Germany. The drop in red meat consumption has led many processing and packing companies to add meat substitutes in their product lineups. Products like soy-based schnitzels have been popping up in many stores in Germany. In fact, the sales of such plant-based products make up 20% of the annual sales of the company. This lucrative market has led to the company increasing their production to cater to more customers.

Other companies, while they haven’t produced any plant-based proteins yet, are now referring to their meat business as a “protein group” to signify the opportunity that they might also provide a variety of protein options in the future. But aside from producing plant-based proteins, companies are also making sure that the ingredients that they use are clean and GMO-free.

The Status of Real Meat

While Tyson has joined the bandwagon of producing plant-based proteins, it still develops strategies to ensure that the real meat business continues to earn money. They are now investing in the traceability of their meat sources and are opting for organic meats.

Tyson Meat Company Invests in Plant Protein with Beyond Meat

People are now shying away from eating so much meat. Some nutrition experts believe that eating too much meat can cause serious, long-term health problems. New companies developing plant-based meat alternatives are racing to create the next big product in “meat.”

As one of the largest meat processors in the country, Tyson Foods shocked consumers when they decided to embrace plant proteins. They invested in the vegan “meat” company, Beyond Meat.  Beyond Meat is the company that brought the market, the Beyond Burger, which is a plant-based burger that looks and tastes like the real thing. Senior vice president in charge of strategy and new ventures, Monica McGurk, noted that the quality of the plant-based burger is amazing and Tyson Foods wants to diversify their food business.

Why Plant-Based Proteins?

There is a growing movement of vegetarianism and veganism in the United States. As more American consumers are eating more plant-based foods, many traditional meat manufacturers are thinking of new ways to grow share of the new plant-based market.

According to the Plant Based Foods Association, businesses in the country such as Califia Farms, Heidi Ho, and Beyond Meat have grown to at least $4.9 billion in sales last June.  The investment that Tyson Foods poured into Beyond Meat came as a shock because a meat company suddenly decided to invest in a plant-based business. Tyson must have seen the lucrative business of plant-based proteins.

Why did Tyson Diversify its Portfolio?

In 2014, Pinnacle Foods which produces canned meat products bought Gardein which creates a line of plant-based products. This creates a positive view that the meat industry is recognizing the movement of veganism. Although it may not cause the complete shift in meat to plant-based proteins, it is still a good sign for vegans and vegetarians all over the world.

However, this particular type of investment will also raise eyebrows, particularly among ardent vegetarians and vegans. Ethan Brown, founder, and CEO of Beyond Meat, said that many vegans see the ethical problem of a meat company investing in a plant-based business. But he is hopeful that this action can make plant-based meats become part of the mainstream decision of many consumers. Such investment is a great way for customers to enjoy plant-based protein in their daily diet.

In a research conducted by Midan Marketing and Meatingplace, 70% of meat-eating respondents said that they could use meat substitutes in place for real meats at least once a week. The reasons why there are a huge following and acceptance of plant-based proteins in the United States is mainly for health. However, other people do it for the ethical reasons.
